A Visit to Phipps Conservatory & Botanical Gardens

Last month we celebrated my birthday in Pittsburgh, our favorite city.

I had requested we visit Phipps Conservatory a while ago, it had been a LONG time since I had last visited. I love things like botanical gardens and flowers...I don't have a green thumb, so I enjoy checking others work who do. ;)
There are SO many things to see at Phipps- it's 15 acres, including a 14 room glasshouse and 23 different gardens. During our visit, there was a special exhibit of Van Gogh in Bloom where various paintings of the artist were created through blooms, trees and props. We saw "Self-Portrait with Straw Hat", "Olive Trees with Yellow Sky and Sun", "Houses at Auvers", "Sunflowers" and my favorite was "Starry Night over the Rhone". It was so beautiful and detailed, literal works of art by one of the greatest artists, Van Gogh.
One of my favorite things was the butterfly forest, so many creatures flying around. They were everywhere and would float right in front of your face. It was hard to get good pictures since they were so quick, but I managed to grab a few.
It was pretty busy on a Sunday afternoon- I read that the slowest days are Monday and Tuesday and the quietest times are between 3 and 5 pm. On Friday evenings, Phipps is open until 10 and it would be really interesting to see it all at night.
It's hard to pick a favorite area or piece- but I think the butterflies always amaze me and make me smile. It's fun to watch them and cool to be in an area with them flying all around you!
I think if we went again, it would be better to go without the kids who have less patience and take a guided tour to hear about the history, current exhibits and different flower shows going on.
Despite the hot day, we had a nice time visiting Phipps and I would love to go during the holidays!

Have you ever visited a botanical garden? I love them so much! Hope you have a wonderful weekend!
