It all started in pre-school at my little graduation when we had to stand in front of our class and all the families gathered what we wanted to be when we grew up. I proudly walked up to the front and stated "When I grow up I want to be a police officer, just like my daddy." Pretty lofty dreams for a four year old. I think I just liked the cop car he was driving at the time. Who doesn't like bright lights and sirens in pre-school?
Things changed as I got older. The sirens aren't as appealing when you're fifteen and they take on a whole new meaning. "Police officer" is not the dream occupation for a sassy teenager.
I began to dream that I would be a writer living in New York City. I wrote about it in five subject notebooks and how I would achieve my dreams even if I was going to eat ramen noodle soup each night. I pictured myself living in the Big City and running down the streets in hot pink heels to catch a taxi and book it to some giant 100 story building and settling in to write an article that millions of people would be amazed by.
As I grew even older the dreams changed, but just a little. I realized I may not make it to be a fabulous journalist writing amazing pieces for the world to read. I settled for working in the Big City. I dreamed that I would be an assistant to a powerful CEO. I dreamed he was a man, but now I wish I would have dreamed it was a woman, because we need more of us leading big business! I thought maybe he would spill his Starbucks that I got for him during the rush in to work and that he would send me shopping at Saks to get a new one to wear for the day. I dreamed he would give me big bonus checks and I would go buy some red bottom heels.
Fast forward to the present. Reality hits a little harder, but that doesn't mean you can't still dream. My dream job would be to simply BE HAPPY. I want to go about my day smiling and feeling as if I am helping someone else. I want to still get that Starbucks and put on those pink heels and come home after a day of work smiling to kick up my feet and sip a good glass of wine knowing I had a fabulous day.
Life is too short to be anything but happy!
